Behold, Western Digital made a 400GB Micro SD card! For when you absolutely have to record up to 40 hours of Full HD in one go!

Every year a brand seems to bring out a new memory card claiming to be the world’s biggest, but this time around, we have to take our hats off and give a round of applause in Western Digital’s direction as the brand just launched a Micro SD card that has a capacity of mind-blowing 400GB.

Yes, you did indeed hear that correctly. That tiny little card you slot into your GoPro, well this one is 400GB and that’s enough to hold up to 40 hours of Full HD video. The applications for this insane bit of technology are limitless and sure to catch the eye of videographers and particularly time-lapse photographers who want to record thousands and thousands of frames over an extended period of time.

The 400GB card, released under the SanDisk brand that Western Digital acquired, is rated as Class 10 and this means that users can expect transfer speeds of up to 100MB/s, which will allow them to move up to 1200 photos per minute! So here’s the science bit; apparently Western Digital achieved this capacity breakthrough by ‘leveraging its proprietary memory technology and design and production processes that allow for more bits per die.’ All we really care about is that this one tiny card could hold a whole week's worth of photoshoots, a full holiday’s worth of videos or even more.

Lastly, SanDisk say the card meets A1 App Performance Class specification, which means it will speed up the loading of applications when used in smart devices. The 400GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card is available now and has a UK RRP of £224.99. The Micro SD card is also backed up with a ten-year warranty.

Also new from Western Digital is the SanDisk iXpand Base, a neat device that downloads and saves photos and videos from your iPhone while charging the battery. The iXapand is available in 32GB (£54), 64GB (£70), 128GB (£106) and 256GB (£177) storage options, and more information can be found here!
